A mediator needs to be able to work on matters which they have a view on. It’s possible to suppress this view and work impartially and non-judgementally, but there are some projects I won’t do.

In the main I work on projects where I am working with both the client and the participants or stakeholders, not for them. If it’s a contentious issue that requires a multi-party solution, then I’ll ask the funder(s) to accept an independence statement. This states simply, that I am working for all parties equally and that if the funder(s) or others try to influence me towards their position, that I’ll declare this to the other parties and withdraw.

I have been attacked by both protestors and problem holders in the past for not being partial to their view. I’ve concluded that this illustrates that I’m doing what I should be doing.
